All that is gold does not glitter, California, Deep Roots, Frodo Baggins, Gandalf, J. R. R. Tolkien, Jesus, The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)
I recently was on a plane coming back to California, sitting next to a self pronounced Atheist. He made a point to challenge my religious beliefs. I took the bait and engaged him in conversation. We had a fascinating debate. The one thing we could agree on was the fact that everyone needs a hero to model oneself after in order to be a better human. My hero is Jesus, who teaches me how to live my life through scripture. This gentleman told me his hero was Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, who teaches him to be humble. This post is in honor of this man – who admitted that although he is an atheist, he is still searching.
All That is Gold Does Not Glitter
(Gandalf’s Song of Aragorn)
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
– by J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973)
